The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) adopted their FY 2016 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule on October 2, 2015, making several additions to the list of eligible services that can be reimbursed when delivered through telehealth. The following codes will be reimbursable (subject to CMS’ other restrictions) under Medicare beginning Jan. 1, 2016 via telehealth:
- 99356 – Prolonged service in the inpatient or observation setting requiring unit/floor time beyond the usual service (the first hour)
- 99357 – Prolonged service in the inpatient or observation setting requiring unit/floor time beyond the usual service (each additional 30 minutes)
Changes will take in effect January 1, 2016.
The Center for Connected Health Policy (CCHP), continuously tracks all the telehealth and telemedicine legislation across the country. In 2012, CCHP became the federally designated National Telehealth Policy Resource Center, tasked with providing technical assistance in telehealth policy to 12 Regional Telehealth Resource Centers nationwide and serving as a national resource on telehealth policy issues.
