Webinar: Improving License Portability through Interstate Licensure Compacts – An Interstate Approach to Improving Access to Care and Addressing Workforce Gaps

Presented by: The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO)

License portability is an ongoing challenge for states and healthcare providers. Most states require physicians to be licensed only within the state their patients reside. This approach often creates unintentional barriers to accessing care and contributes to the growing workforce shortages and gaps across the country.
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) is hosting this webinar, with support from HRSA, to provide states with information on interstate licensure compacts as a method for increasing access to care. These compacts can also be used to address workforce shortages among physicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists, which is a critical issue for underserved populations and rural areas. Examples of interestate licensure compacts include the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) and the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT).
HRSA’s Office for the Advancement of Telehealth will introduce their work promoting the use of telehealth technologies for healthcare delivery, education, and health information services. Then, participants will learn more about IMLC and PSYPACT, and the process for a state to join these compacts. Participants will also hear more from our speakers on challenges, lessons learned, best practices, and successes from participating in these compacts.
The webinar will be 90 minutes long with ample time for Q&A. If you would like to submit a question prior to this webinar, please email Emily Moore, ASTHO’s Senior Analyst of Health Transformation, at emoore@astho.org.
