Digital Navigator Training

Confidence Gained, Skills in Action

The Queen’s Health System and the Pacific Basin Telehealth Resource Center (PBTRC) came together to host a Digital Navigator Training that brought navigators, community health workers, and frontline staff into one space with a shared purpose: helping patients feel more confident using digital health tools.

Throughout the span of four in-person training workshops, over 40 participants received a high-level overview of the online curriculum and engaged in real-life scenarios with hands-on technology.

Across all measures, participants’ confidence grew significantly.

  • Explaining patient portals (MyChart): increased from 2.7 to 4.6 (on a scale from 1 to 5)
  • Supporting telehealth visits: improved from 2.9 to 4.6 (on a scale from 1 to 5)
  • Assessing digital literacy and coaching problem-solving: both rose by more than 1.5 points

These results reflect more than numbers. They represent growth in readiness, understanding, and the ability to apply what was learned in real-world settings. Participants left the training equipped to guide patients through portals, troubleshoot video visits, and connect them to care with greater ease and confidence.

Voices From the Training – The atmosphere was full of energy and connection.

Participants shared what they found most meaningful:
“I’m excited to use motivational interviewing.”
“Keeping health simple with stories really works.”
“I learned helpful tips to assist clients right away.”

They also praised the overall experience:
“Awesome training with great activities to keep us engaged.”
“The instructor was very knowledgeable and informative.”
“I absolutely loved this.”

Why it Matters!

Digital health is an essential part of modern care, yet many patients still face barriers that prevent them from accessing the tools they need. This training gave navigators the confidence, knowledge, and inspiration to bridge those gaps and help patients feel supported at every step.

By bringing together staff from different organizations and islands, The Queen’s Health System and PBTRC are strengthening a statewide network of navigators who are ready to empower patients, build trust, and advance health equity for all.

This was not just a training. It was a turning point that transformed uncertainty into confidence and knowledge into action. Together, we are helping communities across Hawaiʻi stay connected to care.

Mahalo Queen’s Health System for the partnership!
